Once the "Start Tab with Card" feature is enabled in your Terminal Settings, your staff can quickly and securely open a bar tab by pre-authorizing a customer's credit card. This process is initiated right from the POS when starting a new check, saving time in a fast-paced environment and ensuring a payment method is captured upfront before serving.
This feature allows you to:
- Instantly capture and pre-authorize a customer's credit card with a single swipe, dip, or tap, securely attaching the card information to their new tab.
- Maintain service speed even if a card is declined; the system gives you the flexibility to either retry with a different card or bypass the pre-authorization to open the tab immediately.
To Start a Bar Tab with a Card in the POS:
1. If logged out to the PIN screen for inactivity, enter your PIN and tap to log back into the POS device
2. At the top right of the POS screen, tap to bring up the POS options
3. Tap the Check button to open the Check List View, or tap the Floor Plan button to open the Floor Plan View
4. Open a new check:
- By tapping the
button in the bottom right of the Checks List view:
- Or, by tapping a table from the Tables view
5. Swipe, insert, or tap the guest's card after the modal appears
- If the card is processed successfully, "success" will display on the modal.
- If the card is declined, you can swipe another card or open a check without the Bar Tab function.
6. Enter the Customer's Name: Check the Name field. If it is empty after Step 5, manually enter the customer's name.
Note: Whether a name is captured automatically depends on the data provided by the customer's credit card company and issuing bank. Not all card brands consistently return the cardholder's name during a pre-authorization, so it is normal for this field to sometimes remain empty.
7. If needed, adjust any details for Order Type, Revenue Center, or Table, then tap Open Check
8. To verify the pre-authorization was successful, look for the customer's card details on the check
- A successful transaction will display a distinct AUTH tag next to the card type and last four digits:
