Tax Rules can be assigned directly to a Menu Category from the category's own settings, rather than only from the Tax Rule itself. Every item in that category — including items added later — automatically inherits the category's assigned Tax Rule(s), and the inherited rule displays (read-only) on each item's own configuration screen. For finer control, like including or excluding specific items from a rule regardless of category, assign the rule from the Tax Rule itself instead.
- Configurable per Category: Assign one or more Tax Rules to a Menu Category from its Inherited Settings.
- Automatic Inheritance: Every item in the category, including items added later, inherits the category's assigned Tax Rule(s) automatically.
To Assign a Tax Rule to a Menu Category:
1. Navigate to the Menu section in the Bridge and select Categories
2. Select the category to edit, or click + New Category to create one (see How to Add, Edit, and Archive Categories in the Bridge)
3. Scroll to Inherited Settings and click the Tax Rule drop-down
4. Select one or more Tax Rules to apply to this category
5. Click Save
Once saved, every item in this category displays the assigned Tax Rule on its own Tax Rule field — read-only, since it's inherited. Any new item added to the category inherits the same Tax Rule automatically.
Making Items or Categories Untaxed: A menu item is taxed only if a Tax Rule applies to it — directly or inherited from its category. To make an item or category untaxed, don't assign it a Tax Rule, or explicitly exclude it from a Tax Rule that otherwise applies broadly.
