Tax Rules are user-configurable parameters that dictate the application of specific Tax Rates to Order Types and Menu Items. They are useful in cases where varying tax rates, like "Take Out Tax," are mandated by states. These rules can be implemented at either the Location or Group level.
Before starting, ensure you've created at least one Tax Rate and Location, as well as Menu Groups and Menu Items.
To Create a New Tax Rule:
1. Navigate to Settings > Taxes in the Bridge and select Tax Rules
2. Click+ New Tax Rule to open the Tax Rule interface
3. Configure the Settings for the New Tax Rule
A. Select the Tax Rate to use for the rule from the drop-down menu
B. Select the Location, Group, or create a new group from the drop-down menu
C. If this Tax Rule will only apply to a specific Order Type, e.g., Take Out, select it from the drop-down menu. Otherwise, the default setting is to apply this rule to All Order Types
D. Decide whether or not you want this Tax Rule to override all other tax rules by ticking or unticking the Override box
The 'Override' option: When selected, this tax rate will supersede any other potential tax rates. This is beneficial for situations like some states having a singular take-out tax. This can be applied to either an Order Type or a Menu Item, but not to both simultaneously.
If no overriding tax rule is found, all relevant rules will be accumulated as additional taxes. For instance, if there are two corresponding taxes, one at 0.5% and another at 6.5%, the final tax rate applied will total 7.0%.
4. If the Override option was selected above, skip to Step 5. Otherwise, select the Menu Item(s) this Tax Rule will apply to by ticking the boxes next to each item or by clicking on Select All
5. Click Save to save your changes.
